Griffins Drop Preseason Opener, 3-1

Rolling Meadows, Ill. - The Grand Rapids Griffins (0-1-0-0) dropped their preseason opener by a 3-1 score to the Chicago Wolves (1-1-0-0) on Thursday night at West Meadows Ice Arena.

Joey MacDonald kept the Wolves off the scoreboard in the first period, stopping all seven shots he faced, while Michael Garnett was up to the task, blanking the Griffins on nine shots.

The home team opened the scoring with a tally from Kevin Doell 16:38 into the second period from Brad Tapper and Eric Healey.

Tomas Kopecky notched a power play tally from Jeff Nelson and Danny Groulx at 5:51 of the third period, making the score 1-1.

Simon Gamache broke the tie with a power play goal while Chicago enjoyed a two-man advantage at 13:59 from Greg Hawgood.

Evan Nielsen iced the game with an unassisted empty net goal with 27 seconds remaining in the third period.

MacDonald played the entire game, stopping 22 shots in a losing effort, while Garnett made 36 saves for the win.

The Griffins finish their preseason schedule tomorrow night when they play the Milwaukee Admirals at the Wilson Park Ice Arena in Milwaukee at 8:30.
