Springfield Falcons News Release
Kingston, RI â Forwards Martin Podlesak and Peter Ferraro provided scoring for Springfield as the Falcons skated to a 2-2 tie with the Providence Bruins at Boss Arena at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday evening. Rookie netminder David LeNeveu stopped each of the 17 shots he faced in 30:25 of action in the Falcons' preseason opener. Providence center Blake Belleueille's second goal of the game with 29.8 seconds remaining in regulation knotted the contest for the Bruins.
Despite being outshot 16-6 in the first period, the Falcons carried a 1-0 lead into intermission. Podlesak snapped a shot over the left shoulder of P-Bruins goaltender Peter Hamerlik from the top of the right wing faceoff circle at the 9:29 mark. Defenseman Martin Wilde collected an assist on the goal with a lead pass in the neutral zone.
The Bruins were whistled for five consecutive minor penalties in the first 10:43 of the second frame, but Springfield was unable to extend its lead.
Providence pulled even in the game during four-on-four play when Bellefueille redirected a pass from right wing Carl Corazzini while standing at the edge of the crease at 12:26.
Ferraro's first goal of the preseason came with 4.1 seconds remaining in the middle period to regain a lead for the Falcons. Forward Tyler Beecher set up the goal by carrying the puck wide along the right wing boards and centering a pass through traffic from below the Providence goal line. Ferraro collected the puck in the low slot before lifting a shot under the cross bar.
Springfield outshot the Bruins, 12-2, during the second period.
After Hamerlick vacated the Providence goal for an extra attacker in the closing minute of regulation, Bellefueille batted a rebound out of mid-air for the game-tying tally.
The Falcons mustered two shots in the overtime period, while Providence collected one shot.
Rookie goaltender Scott Dickie turned aside 9 of 11 shots after replacing LeNeveu in the Springfield net midway through the second period.
