
Capitals Assign Three To Pirates

PORTLAND, ME - The Washington Capitals, the National Hockey League affiliate of the Portland Pirates, on Thursday assigned forwards Trent Whitfield and Darcy Verot and goaltender Maxime Ouellet to the Pirates, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced. All three players joined the Pirates for practice today at Portland Ice Arena. All Pirates' on-ice practices during training camp are open to the public.
The Capitals' preseason roster now stands at 27 players - 15 forwards, 10 defensemen and two goalies. Since opening training camp September 12 with 51 players, the Capitals have made six sets of roster moves. The team must have its roster set at 23 players prior to opening night October 9. To make room on their roster, the Pirates released forwards Connor Dunlop, Sean Starke and Jason Ralph, defenseman Wade Winkler and goaltenders Maxime Gingras and Jamie Vanek. The Pirates now have 25 players in training camp including 16 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
The Pirates are coming off a 3-2 win over the Manchester Monarchs in pre-season action last night at Biddeford Ice Arena. Scott Pellerin, Matt Libby and Chris Hajt had the goals and Rastislav Stana earned the win in net with 29 saves. The Pirates are now 2-0 on the pre-season after a 4-0 win over the Lowell Lock Monsters on Tuesday in Nashua, New Hampshire. The Pirates will host the Lock Monsters on Saturday, October 4th at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the game are on sale all week at the Civic Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and at Ticketmaster.com. The Pirates begin the 2003-2004 American Hockey League season on Friday, October 10th when they visit the Lowell Lock Monsters at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates open the home half of their schedule on Friday, October 17th when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Civic Center at 7:05 p.m. As part of Opening Night festivities, Rivalries, Margaritas and the Brian Boru will be hosting a pre-game block party from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with drink specials, giveaways and mascot appearances.
The Pirates will be back on Civic Center ice on Saturday, October 18th when they host the Manchester Monarchs at 7:05 p.m. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Pirates' magnetic schedule courtesy of Paul G.
