Griffins Clinch Berth in 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs
April 2, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich . - The Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday, while idle, clinched a berth in the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, courtesy of Hamilton's 2-4 regulation loss versus Chicago and Adirondack's 4-5 regulation loss at San Antonio.
By clinching, Jeff Blashill became the first coach in franchise history to qualify for the playoffs in three consecutive seasons - Bruce Cassidy, Danton Cole and Greg Ireland each made back-to-back playoff appearances. Furthering his accolades, Blashill also recently became the first coach in franchise history to lead the Griffins to three 90-point seasons with Wednesday's 6-1 rout of the Rockford IceHogs.
The Griffins, who currently lead Rockford by five points for the top spot in the Midwest Division, have eight games remaining in the regular season, including Friday's rematch with the IceHogs at the BMO Harris Bank Center at 8 p.m. Grand Rapids' magic number over Rockford for clinching a top-three seed in the Western Conference is 14 points heading into Friday's game. Overall, the Griffins (41-19-6-2, 90 pts.) rank third in the conference behind the league-leading San Antonio Rampage (43-20-5-1, 92 pts.) and the Utica Comets (42-19-6-1, 91 pts.).
Following their trip to Rockford, the Griffins will return to Van Andel Arena to host the Toronto Marlies on Saturday at 7 p.m.
