Shane Harper Named Chicago Wolves' 2014-15 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year
April 2, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
The Chicago Wolves are proud to announce that right wing SHANE HARPER has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Chicago community during the 2014-15 season.
While HARPER's 29 goals lead the Wolves and share second place in the AHL, the 26-year-old has been just as valuable off the ice for his service to the community. Since Day 1 as a member of the Wolves, the second-year forward has gone above and beyond to become a fixture at Wolves fundraising events, Read to Succeed trips and Wolves Wish endeavors. His energy and enthusiasm make him a magnet for the fans.
The Valencia, Calif., native has served as a spokesman for the team's "Read to Succeed" program, which has reached more than 500,000 children over the last 19 years. He has visited several libraries and takes pride in using his stature as a professional athlete to inspire children to use their minds to reach their goals and dreams. He was instrumental in the team's Breast Cancer Awareness efforts that raised nearly $15,000 and helped nearly 100 women receive mammograms who otherwise couldn't afford one.
When the Wolves engaged in their most popular fundraiser of the season, the St. Patrick's Day specialty jerseys that raised money and awareness for Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago and Chicago Wolves Charities, HARPER's willingness to wear a different green jersey for each of three home games enabled the team to raise even more money to benefit Easter Seals' Therapeutic School and autism research.
HARPER is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2014-15 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, which honors the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League later this month.
