Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are proud to announce that Barry Goers has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton community during the 2014-15 season.

A fifth-year pro in his second season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Barry has been a leader this year for the Penguins' efforts in the community. In addition to taking part in visits to local hospitals whenever possible, Barry has also spoken at area schools on the topic of Heart, Mind, Body regarding the importance of sportsmanship, education and nutrition. He most recently spoke at length on this theme to the students at Kistler Elementary in Wilkes-Barre, while also teaching a Hockey 101 skills session following the assembly.

Barry continues to be involved with Project Genesis - a school program in San Andres Itzapa, a small village in Guatemala. A volunteer himself with the program during the off-season, Barry also raises funds through his GoFundMe page in hopes of building an actual school for the children of the village.

Barry Goers is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2014-15 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League later this month.
