Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors launched 44 shots on goal, but came up one goal short in a 3-2 loss to the Reading Royals at the BI-LO Center on Saturday night. The loss dropped Greenville to 0-2-0 to begin the season.
In the first period of Saturday night's game, the Road Warriors nearly equaled their shot total from the night before and outshot Reading 15-10. Royals goalie Joe Palmer turned away each of the shots he faced, though, and goals by Matt Schepke and Chad Painchaud staked Reading to a 2-0 lead. Schepke's first of the season came at 6:21 of the first then Painchaud doubled the lead with his first of the season at 14:08. Greenville had the lone power play chance of the period, on which they registered two shots, but couldn't use it to dent the Reading advantage.
The Road Warriors carried the play in the second period as they put 13 shots on net to Reading's nine and scored the lone goal of the frame. Jeff Prough caused a turnover at center, scooped up a loose puck, and raced into the Royals' zone on the right wing. His wrist shot hit off of Palmer's left arm and caromed across the goal line at 16:34. The unassisted score pulled Greenville within one at 2-1. Tempers flared a bit at the end of the second at T.J. Reynolds and Reading's Dennis McCauley picked up matching roughing minors.
The third period was a continuation of Greenville's furious effort to get back into the game. It was their busiest period of the game with 16 shots on goal against just six for Reading. One of those shots, though, found its way past goalie Billy Sauer. From the right point, Reading defenseman Rob Kwiet left a slap shot along the ice that found its way through traffic and across the goal line. The score at 2:07 of the third proved to be the game winner as Prough notched his second of the night, third of the season, at 8:26.
Greenville had two power play chances late in the third after Prough had pulled the Road Warriors within one. Reading's defense, and goalie Palmer, held the fort, however, and despite a heavy late charge Greenville couldn't find the tying score.
Sauer suffered the loss as he made 22 saves on the night. Greenville was 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
