Stingrays Fall to Nailers on Military Appreciation Night

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays (1-1-0-0) fell to the Wheeling Nailers (2-0-0-0) 4-1 on Military Appreciation Night presented by Force Protection Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Nailers forward Chris Barton recorded the only goal of the first period tapping a loose puck past the right pad of Stingrays goaltender Daren Machesney at 10:36. Barton's first goal of the season was unassisted.

The Stingrays tied the contest on the power play at 9:33 of second period when forward Matt Pope pushed a rebound past Nailers netminder Patrick Killeen. Forwards Sean Dolan and Chris Higgins earned assists. The Nailers reclaimed the lead with a shorthanded marker from Barton at 10:50 from forward Paul Crowder. Moments later, Nailers forward Patrick Johnson made it a two-goal advantage at 12:48 with help from forward Ben Winnett.

The Nailers added one more goal in the third period from forward Matt Lombardi on the power play to make it 4-1. Forward Tim Crowder and defenseman Zach Hansen recorded assists.

Machesney suffered the loss stopping 30 of 34 Nailers shots. Killeen improves to 2-0-0-0 kicking away 17 of 18 Stingrays chances. The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play while the Nailers went 1-for-10.

The Stingrays kickoff a five-game road trip starting Saturday, October 22 as they take on the Toledo Walleye at 7:00 p.m. at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio.
