K-Wings Countdown to Face-Off

The curtain for the 2011-12 season will rise tonight as the Kalamazoo Wings host the Cincinnati Cyclones. The two rivals will square off 14 times this season, including two meetings in the month of October, both at Wings Stadium.

Kalamazoo enters the new season looking to defend the Eastern Conference crown. Since joining the ECHL in 2009, the K-Wings have captured the North Division title in both of their seasons in the Premiere "AA" Hockey League.

Two seasons ago, Cincinnati captured the Eastern Conference crown en route to their second Kelly Cup Championship. Last season, the Cyclones reached the postseason for the fifth consecutive season, but lost to the Reading Royals, three games to one, in the conference quarterfinals.

K-Wings Name Captains

On Wednesday, the K-Wings announced this year's selections as captains. For the second straight year, defenseman Wes O'Neill will wear the "C", while defenseman Sam Ftorek and forward Kory Karlander were named assistant captains.

Solid Core

The K-Wings are bringing back a solid core from last year's Eastern Conference Championship team. In total 10 players from this year's roster were a part of last year's championship squad; however, forward Dean Strong will start the season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves.

A Rare Occurrence

Saturday's regular season opener will mark just the second-time in the K-Wings' 38-year history that they will open the season at Wings Stadium. The previous time that the K-Wings opened up the season at home was during the 1979-80 season, when Kalamazoo, who was in the IHL, defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 7-3 en route to capturing the organization's first championship.

October-fest

Since joining the ECHL last season, the K-Wings have thrived in games played in October. Over the last two seasons, the K-Wings are 9-4-0-1 in games played in October.
