Greensboro Pitching Anchors 2-1 Win Over Delmarva

Salisbury, Md. - Three Greensboro Grasshoppers (43-33, 3-3) pitchers combined to retire the final 16 batters in a 2-1 game two win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (37-39, 2-4) on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The series is tied at one game apiece.

The Grasshoppers were first on the board in the second inning. Wilfredo Gimenez started the inning with a single. Jacob Realmuto followed with a single to advance Gimenez to second. Two batters later, Isaac Galloway walked to load the bases. Then, Dan Black hit a check swing grounder towards the mound to score Gimenez.

The Shorebirds knotted the score at 1-1 in the second. With one out, Jeremy Nowak hit a his first South Atlantic League homer over the left-center field wall.

In the third, Mark Canha started a two out rally with a double to left-center. Then, Gimenez hit a soft flare over Mike Flacco's head at first to score Canha to give the Grasshoppers a 2-1 lead.

Neither team scored the remainder of the night. The Shorebirds had just one hit after the third inning and Grasshoppers managed just two hits after the third.

Greensboro starter Rett Varner picked up the win in six innings. He allowed just two hits and one run. Grant Dayton entered in the seventh and struck out five batters over two scoreless innings while Michael Brady picked up his tenth save of the year in the ninth.

Shorebirds starter Jacob Pettit was saddled with the loss in six innings. He scattered six hits and allowed just two runs. Ashur Tolliver tossed two scoreless innings and Josh Dowdy struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning.

The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game three of the series at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday morning. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for the ‘Birds.
