Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, outlasted the Kannapolis Intimidators for the 10-8 win in 13 innings, before 1,299 fans at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday night.

The Crawdads (43-30, 3-2) struck first with four runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. Three straight singles began the ballgame, with C Tomas Telis driving in SS Jurickson Profar for the 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Then, with two on and two down in the top of the second, Profar belted a three-run bomb against RHP Dexter Carter to put Hickory in front, 4-0.

Kannapolis (40-33, 3-2) came racing right back with six runs in the bottom of the second against RHP Roman Mendez. The biggest blow of the frame, which also put Kannapolis ahead, 6-4, was a two-run homer by 1B Dan Black. The Intimidators kept swinging away with two more tallies against Mendez in the third to take the 8-4 advantage, before the bullpen took over.

RHP Colby Killian took over with one down in the third and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, giving the bats a chance to chip away at the deficit. Hickory pulled within two runs of tying it with a pair of tallies in the fourth. CF Josh Richmond led off with a single and took third on a double by LF Alejandro Selen. One out later, RF Yefry Castillo plated Richmond with an RBI single and then Profar followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Selen to cut the Kannapolis lead to 8-6.

Hickory continued the comeback by loading the bases with two down in the top of the fifth for 1B Jhonny Gomez. Carter hit Gomez with a pitch, forcing in a run to make it 8-7, before RHP Chase Cooney got out of the inning with no further damage.

LHP Jimmy Reyes then took over on the mound for the Crawdads and dealt scoreless innings through the sixth and the seventh, keeping Hickory within one run. RHP Joe Van Meter relieved Reyes and dealt a scoreless bottom of the eighth before Hickory came back in the top of the ninth.

With one down and no outs against RHP Jake Wilson, Selen belted his team-leading eighth home run of the season, tying the game at 8-8. Van Meter forced extra frames with a scoreless bottom of the ninth, and then kept the Intimidators off the board in the 10th and 11th as well.

The 'Dads threatened in the 12th, but RHP Nick McCully (L, 1-1) worked out of the stanza with the tie intact. Hickory countered with RHP Ben Henry (W, 2-0), who struck out the side in the bottom of the 12th, forcing a 13th inning.

2B Odubel Herrera sparked the offense with a bunt single, his fourth hit of the game, to lead off the top of the 13th. Telis chopped a base hit to right field, advancing Herrera to third base with no outs. 3B Christian Villanueva drove in Herrera with a sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Crawdads in their first lead since the second inning, 9-8. Telis then took second on a wild pitch, before 1B Andrew Clark belted an RBI double off the right-field wall for the 10-8 advantage.

RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 12) came on for the Crawdads in the bottom of the 13th and, after consecutive singles to start the inning, escaped unscathed to close the 10-8 win for Hickory in 13 frames.
