Grayson Streches Streaks in Spikes' 3-0 Loss to ValleyCats

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Casey Grayson extended his on-base streak to 21 games, and his hitting streak to 12 games, but the State College Spikes were held in check as they fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats, 3-0, on Sunday evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Both of Grayson's streaks are now the longest active strings in the New York-Penn League, and the University of Houston product is now just five games shy of matching Rowan Wick's franchise record for consecutive games reaching base, set last year.

Grayson prolonged both of them with a seventh-inning single just inside the bag down the third base line, one of five hits on the game for the Spikes (10-12). State College's biggest threat was in the eighth, when a wild pitch on strike three to Craig Aikin, a two-out single by Thomas Spitz, and a walk by Mike Pritchard loaded the bases. However, Tri-City (12-11) reliever Juan Santos (2) was able to douse the threat by eliciting a inning-ending out on the ground at second base.

Pat Porter did the damage for the ValleyCats, collecting three hits and driving in all three of the night's runs. Porter's two-out, two-run double in the second put Tri-City on the board, and the right fielder concluded the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.

State College's Landon Beck (1-2) took the loss but still produced a quality start on the hill, allowing all three runs on a total of five hits, a walk and a hit batsman over 6 1/3 innings. Beck struck out four batters and threw 81 pitches, 56 of them for strikes, on the evening.

Tri-City starter Dean Deetz (3-1) got the win after throwing five shutout innings for the second straight outing. Deetz yielded two hits and a walk while striking out four batters. The right-hander threw 53 pitches, 39 of them for strikes, in the victory.

Agapito Barrios followed Deetz on the mound and threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Santos picked up the save by retiring all four batters he faced.

Mike Pritchard reached base three times for the Spikes, twice via walk, and stole a base in the game.

The Spikes and ValleyCats will conclude their three-game series, as well as State College's six-game homestand, with a 12:00 p.m. matinee matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Carson Cross (1-0), who earned his first professional victory in his last trip to the mound, will get the start for State College. Tri-City is now slated to send left-hander Alex Winkelman (0-0) to the hill for the start in his first New York-Penn League appearance.
