-SPIKES FACE VALLEYCATS IN NYPLCS REMATCH: Tonight, the State College Spikes continue their 10th Season in Central PA with the middle game of a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The matchup reunites the teams who have participated in each of the last two New York-Penn League Championship Series. Tri-City's last regular-season visit to State College was in 2013, when the Spikes swept a three-game series before the ValleyCats took the title. In 2014, Tri-City took two out of three in the regular season at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY, but State College won its first-ever NYPL championship. All-time, the Spikes are 16-18 against the ValleyCats over the regular season and postseason, including a 7-9 record in games played at Medlar FIeld at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: The Spikes produced a season-high 17 hits, with three each from Casey Grayson, Jose Godoy and Mike Pritchard, but a pair of homers helped propel the Tri-City ValleyCats to take an 8-7 decision on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Grayson, who added a pair of runs batted in on the night, extended his on-base streak to 20 games, the longest such string in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product also stretched his hitting streak to 11 games, also the longest in the league. State College jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings thanks to a balanced offensive attack that generated 10 hits over that span. However, Tri-City got a three-run homer to right from Brooks Marlow in the fourth inning to draw within a run, and a two-run shot from Dexture McCall in the seventh gave the ValleyCats their second lead of the game. The Spikes would rally to tie the game in the seventh on run-scoring singles from Grayson and Godoy, but Johnny Sewald scored on a close play at the plate to produce the eventual winning run on Cesar Carrasco's sacrifice fly in the eighth.
-BECK GETS BALL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Landon Beck makes the start on the mound tonight for State College. Beck has been superb this season, compiling a 1.13 ERA for the third-best mark in the New York-Penn League over his first four appearances of the year. Last time out, the Anderson, SC native earned his first win of the year with six one-run innings at Auburn on Sunday. Beck yielded three of the four total hits he allowed in the start to Andrew Stevenson, but also struck out eight batters, the most for any Spikes pitcher in a single outing this season.
-VALLEYCATS GO WITH DEETZ: Right-hander Dean Deetz gets the start for Tri-City in a shuffle of the "piggyback" tandem he forms with right-hander Agapito Barrios. Deetz tossed five shutout innings in a start against Lowell on Monday for the win, and has not allowed a run over his last 8 1/3 innings on the mound. The Astros' 2014 11th-round draft choice out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M went 2-4 with an 8.88 ERA over 13 appearances in the Appalachian League for Rookie-level Greenville last year.
-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson has reached base in all 20 games he has played so far to post the longest active streak in the New York-Penn League, and has also put together a 11-game hitting streak, tied with Dexture McCall of Tri-City for the longest such active string in the league. The University of Houston product still leads the NYPL in batting average with a .403 mark, and his .476 on-base percentage is tops in the league. Grayson's pair of runs batted in last night also bumped his season total to 17, the third-most in the loop.
-SPIKE MARKS: Tri-City's win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last night was the ValleyCats' first in the regular season since August 9, 2010 ...Grayson is hitting .538 with runners in scoring position and two outs this season...Leobaldo Pina is hitting .400 in that situation this year......Jacob Evans has allowed just 4.50 baserunners per nine innings, tying for the best mark among NYPL relievers...The Spikes are third in the NYPL as a team with a .256 batting average...Tri-City does not have a triple yet this year...State College plays at noon tomorrow to finish the series against Tri-City
