Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from an early four-run deficit as Richie Martin hit a two-run homer and Mikey White beat out an RBI infield single to snap a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-4 New York-Penn League victory over the West Virginia Black Bears Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.
The Black Bears got an RBI single from Albert Baur in the first inning and three more runs in the second, including RBI doubles from Casey Hughston and Ulises Montilla for a quick 4-0 lead. But Lake Monsters starter Jonnie Massad settled down and allowed just two hits over the next four innings, finishing his six innings of work with just two earned runs allowed, no walks and six strikeouts
The Vermont rally begain in the second as Chris Iriart led off the inning with a double and scored on Seth Brown's RBI groundball single to centerfield. Then in the third, Martin smacked a two-run homer to leftfield to cut the deficit to one. For Martin, the Oakland A's first-round pick in the 2015 draft, it was his first Centennial Field home run and second homer overall this season.
The Lake Monsters tied the game in the sixth as Iriart led off with a double, advanced to third on one of Seong-min Kim's three singles and scored on a wild pitch by Black Bears reliever Daniel Zamora. Vermont manufactured the go ahead run in the seventh as Ryan Howell singled with one out, advanced to second on a Martin walk and then to third on a Steven Pallares groundout. White then hit a grounder into the hole at shortstop and just beat the throw of Eric Forgione to first base for the RBI single scoring Howell.
Vermont reliever Derek Beasley retired all five batters he faced, including two by strikeout, in his 1 2/3 innings of work to earn the victory, while James Naile one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings for his first save. Iriart was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Howell 2-for-3 with two runs for the Lake Monsters (9-13). Eric Dorsch was charged with the run in the seventh inning to take the loss for West Virginia (10-12), while Montilla was 2-for-3 and Logan Hill 2-for-4 for the Black Bears.
The Lake Monsters will wrap up their six-game homestand with the finale of the three-game series with the Black Bears on Make-A-Wish Family Night at the ballpark on Monday  at 7:05 pm.
