Late Run Sinks Connecticut in Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, PA-The Connecticut Tigers (10-12) lost 3-2 to the Williamsport Crosscutters (17-5) on Sunday evening. It was the second straight lose in the series and third lose in a row overall for the Tigers.

Connecticut trailed to 2-1 after seven innings but they were able to tie the game in the top of the eighth against Juan Figueroa (1-0). Shortstop AJ Simcox (1-4, R) started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by designated hitter Jacob Kapstein. The next batter was Victor Padron (1-3, RBI) and he drove in the tying run with an RBI groundout.

The tie didn't last long as Williamsport regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning against Tiger pitcher Jake Shull (0-1). Centerfielder Zach Coppola (1-4) bunted for a single with one out and moved to third on a balk and wild pitch. The next two batters walked to load the bases. Shull then walked the next man as well, right fielder Jose Pujols (2-3, R) and forced in the winning run.

Connecticut started Trey Teakell for the third time this season. The TCU product worked three innings allowing two runs on two hits. Both runs scored on a two run homerun by Jan Hernandez. For Hernandez it was his league tying fourth homerun.

The save today goes to Robert Tasin who now has five on the year. He retired the side in order in the ninth. Luke Leftwich started the game for Williamsport and went three innings giving up two hits and no runs. It was his first start in three appearances so far this season.

Connecticut will play Williamsport tomorrow in the final game of the three game series. The first pitch on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
