Gray Shines Again, Isotopes Beat El Paso 3-2

NEED TO KNOW: Right-hander Jon Gray turned in his sixth-straight quality start as the Albuquerque Isotopes (30-36) beat the El Paso Chihuahuas (31-34) 3-2 at Isotopes Park Tuesday night. The Isotopes will go for the three-game series sweep Wednesday night at 7:05.

THE TURNING POINT: The Isotopes and Chihuahuas traded a pair of runs in the third, and then remained scoreless until Albuquerque broke through in the eighth. Tim Wheeler led off the inning with a single, and Matt McBride followed with a base knock of his own. Drew Stubbs then picked up his second hit of the night, an RBI single to center that scored Wheeler. Right- hander Jairo Diaz shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.

GRAY THE GREAT: Right-handed pitcher Jon Gray turned in the Isotopes fifth quality start in their last six games. The Colorado Rockies top prospect finished with 6.0 innings pitched, three hits and two runs. He also struck out eight batters, while walking just one. It is his sixth-straight quality start, and he has lowered his ERA from 10.70 on April 27 to 4.62 after tonight's game. Gray surrendered a leadoff home run and a two-out RBI double in the second. Aside from that inning, he retired 15 of the other 17 batters he faced, allowing just a single in the fourth and a batter to reach on an error in the fifth.

WHEEL(ER)S ON THE BUS: Tim Wheeler turned a 2-for-3 evening that included a run scored. He led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single a later scored the game-winning run on Drew Stubbs' base knock. In his last 11 games, the outfielder is now batting .417 (15-for-36) with four runs scored, one homer, five RBI and seven walks.

STUBB-LING ALONG: Outfielder Drew Stubbs drove in the game's winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. He finished the night 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. In the last 13 games, Stubbs has picked up hits in seven of them and is batting .333 (16-for-48) with 11 run scored, three doubles, a triple, a homer, 10 RBI and 10 walks.

50¢ HOT DOGS: The 9,017 fans at Isotopes Park for 50¢ Hot Dog Night Tuesday ate an astounding 22,903 hot dogs. Tuesday's 50¢ Hot Dog Night was dedicated to former Ovations Food Service employee Matt Butler, who passed away a week ago.

CAMO HATS ON FRIDAY: The first 2,500 fans 21 and older to Friday night's 7:05 game will receive a free camo hat courtesy of Miller Lite. There will also be post-game fireworks shows after Saturday and Sunday's games, as well as a litany of Father's Day festivities planned for Sunday.

ON DECK: The Isotopes and Chihuahuas will play the finale of their three-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right- handed pitcher Eddie Butler (0-0, 2.57) will make his second start since joined the Topes and first in Albuquerque, while El Paso will send left-handed pitcher Jason Lane (4-4, 4.34) to the mound.

IN THE HOLE: After this three-game series against the Chihuahuas, the Isotopes will welcome Tacoma Rainiers to town for a four-game series before an off day on Monday. Albuquerque will then hit the road for a seven-game road trip to El Paso and Salt Lake.
