Iowa Cubs News Release
PAPILLION, Neb. (June 17, 2015) - A day after hitting four home runs, Omaha hit two late three-run home runs to lift the Storm Chasers (34-32) past the Iowa Cubs (34-31) 7-4 in Pacific Coast League action Wednesday afternoon at Werner Park. The win means Omaha took the three-game series two games to one.
Iowa got the scoring started in the third inning when Jonathan Mota came in to score on an errant throw by Omaha's Orlando Calixte on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Dent. The Cubs added another run in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Junior Lake, his first dinger as an I-Cub this season.
Iowa extended its lead in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Arismendy Alcantara hit his league-leading seventh triple to begin the frame, then scored on a John Andreoli RBI-single to left field. Matt Szczur reached on a fielder's choice, then stole second and third base before coming in to score on wild pitch.
Trailing 4-0, Omaha struck back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-out, three-run home run from Dusty Coleman off Iowa right-hander Felipe Paulino.
Paulino had been humming along until the Coleman smash. He allowed just the three-run shot in 5.2 innings. Paulino surrendered seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a no-decision.
Righty Gonzalez Germen relieved Paulino and got the final out in the sixth. However, when he returned for the seventh inning he was greeted by a single, a double and finally a three-run home run off the bat of Paulo Orlando, his fifth of the season, to give Omaha a 6-4 lead.
In total, Germen (4-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings to raise his season ERA to 4.73.
Omaha added an insurance run in the eighth off Iowa right-hander Armando Rivero. Calixte led off the inning with a double, then scored three batters later on a sacrifice bunt from Whit Merrifield.
Rehabbing Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy got the start for Omaha and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. He struck out six in 3.2 innings on 65 pitches in his second rehab start.
Lefty Chris Dwyer (1-0) piggybacked Duffy and earned the win thanks to 3.1 innings of two-run ball on three hits and two walks. He struck out two. Right-hander Michael Mariot tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to earn the save, his fifth of the season.
Teagarden paced Iowa with two hits. Alcantara reached twice on a hit and a walk. Szczur scored a run and stole two bases.
Orlando led Omaha with three hits, an RBI, a run and a walk. Coleman drove in three on two hits and scored a run.
Iowa will now head to Round Rock, Texas to begin a four-game series with the Round Rock Express, Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. First pitch Thursday night is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Carlos Pimentel (4-4, 3.67) is scheduled to make the start for Iowa opposite Express right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (7-1, 2.45).
