NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Stephen Piscotty and Xavier Scruggs homered to power the Memphis Redbirds to a 7-5 win over the cross-state rival Nashville Sounds in a finale of a three-game series on Wednesday at First Tennessee Park.

With the win, the Redbirds (36-31) took two out of three from their Tennessee rivals and travel to Oklahoma City for four games on Thursday to continue their seven-game road trip.

Piscotty (2-for-4, BB, SB) hit his eighth homer of the season while scoring three runs and driving in two. Scruggs' third-inning blast extended his hitting streak to a season-high six games.

Redbirds starter Tim Cooney (6-3) collected his team-leading sixth win while matching a season-best eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. Cooney, who scattered six hits and walked one for three runs, has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 10 of his 12 starts this season.

Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter and former American League Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito. Piscotty ripped a one-out single to right, stole second base, and came around to score as Dan Johnson singled through the shifted Nashville infield.

Piscotty and Scruggs took Zito deep in the third for a 4-0 Redbirds advantage. After a Tommy Pham walk to get thing started, Piscotty hit a towering two-run homer down the left field. Two batters later, Scruggs lined a solo shot to left, his team-leading 11th of the season.

Craig Gentry recorded Nashville's first hit of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. Two innings later, the Sounds trimmed the lead to one at 4-3 on back-to-back RBI groundouts by Joey Wendle and rehabber Ike Davis.

The Redbirds tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth, beginning with a Greg Garcia RBI single to center that plated Piscotty. Next batter Jacob Wilson followed with a two-run double to center to break the game wide open.

Nashville added a run in the eighth on a Memphis fielding error, and tacked on another in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single against Sam Tuivailala, who later converted his team-leading 11th save of the season.

The Redbirds continue their road trip with a four-game series with the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Right-hander Zach Petrick will take the ball in Thursday's 7:05pm CT opener against Dodgers righty Joe Wieland (5-3, 5.19).
