
Grasshoppers Plate Five In Seventh To Top Shorebirds, 8-5

Salisbury, Md. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers plated seven runs between the sixth and eighth innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 8-5 at NewBridge Bank Park on Sunday. The Shorebirds lead the series two games to one.
For a third straight night, the Shorebirds were first to crack the scoreboard. In the third, Trent Mummey blasted his second home run of the season off the top of the video board in right-center field to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 advantage.
The Grasshoppers tied the game in the fourth inning. Mark Canha, who was making his debut for the Grasshoppers, hit a solo homer over the left field wall.
The Shorebirds again used the long ball in the sixth inning. Manny Machado hit a one out double. After Kieron Pope walked, Kipp Schutz hit a three-run homer over the right-center field to give the Shorebirds a 4-1 edge. It was his second homer of the season.
The Grasshoppers plated an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Mark Canha reached on a fielding error by Machado. After two ground outs, Noah Perio doubled to cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the seventh, the Shorebirds tacked on another run to build a 5-2 lead. Mummey started the inning by drawing a walk. After a single by Jonathan Schoop, he scored on a Machado single.
The Grasshoppers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take their first lead of the night. Ryan Palsha allowed three hits and walked two batters to open the seventh. He was replaced by Jason Gurka. Jon Bonadonna connected on a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at 5-5. The Grasshoppers took the lead on a passed ball, a wild pitch and a dropped fly ball in left field by Kieron Pope.
Ryan Palsha was saddled with the loss, his first of the season. Relief pitcher Grant Dayton earned the win for Greensboro.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers square off in the series finale on Monday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. RHP Luis Noel will make third start of the season.
