Red-Hot Honeck Leads Gnats to 6-2 Win Sunday

SAVANNAH, GA -Red-hot hitting Sam Honeck powered the Savannah Sand Gnats to a 6-2 victory over the Greenville Drive Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (5-5) have now won a season-best four straight games.
Sunday, Honeck, who rides a seven-game hitting streak, was a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, a two-run home run, and a walk. He was leading the South Atlantic League in batting average entering Sunday, and is now hitting an even .500 for the season (19 H/38 AB). In the first inning, after left fielder Alonzo Harris reached on an error and stole second, Honeck ripped a hot shot down the first base line for a double to bring home Harris for a 1-0 Savannah lead. In the fifth inning, after DH Robbie Shields singled home 2B Luis Nieves to give the Gnats a 2-0 lead, Honeck struck again, blasting a two run home run to straight away right for a 4-0 Savannah lead. In the third, Honeck drove a double deep to right-center field, but was stranded at second base. In the seventh, with two runners aboard, and the Gants leading 4-2, Greenville reliever Garrett Rau worked carefully to Honeck, eventually walking the slugger to load the bases. CF Cory Vaughn followed with a sacrifice fly to put Savannah in front 5-2.
Gnats pitching struck out 16 Greenville Drive (6-5) batters Sunday, setting a new team season-high for a nine-inning game. Starter Chase Huchingson struck out seven Drive batters in his four innings of work. He gave way to Germen Gonzalez who punched out seven more Greenville hitters in his three innings on his way to earning the win. Gnats reliever Josh Edgin fanned two more in the eighth inning. With 19 strikeouts in Saturday's 14-inning game, Gnats pitching now has fanned 35 batters in the last two games.
The Gnats will start RHP Greg Peavey (1-0, 3.60) Monday against Drive RHP Kyle Stroup (0-1, 6.00) looking for the series sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates will open at 6 pm. The pregame show will begin on News/Talk 630 at 6:50 pm.
