Gorillas Prevail in New Mexico

Rio Rancho, New Mexico 12/28/07 - The Amarillo Gorillas got their third road victory of the season, and snapped a three game losing streak by beating the New Mexico Scorpions 4-1 on Friday night. The win was the second in a row at the Santa Ana Star Center for Amarillo, and their biggest win over the Scorpions this year.

The Gorillas would get all the offense they needed in the first period, with two goals from David Nimmo, and one from Bill Vandermeer. New Mexico's Andrew Smale would get a breakaway goal at 13:49 of the period, and the Scorpions would be shut out by Dan McWhinney the rest of the way. McWhinney would make 34 saves in the game, en route to his fourth win of the season, and was especially big in the second period making 15 saves to uphold the Gorillas lead.

Vandermeer would add his second goal of the night at 2:32 of the third period, and would finish the night with two goals and an assist. Nimmo finished with two goals, and Austin Sutter would finish with two assists.

The Gorillas moved to 8-15-4 on the year, and with 20 points were able to gain ground on the Scorpions in the Southwest Division. The Scorpions are in third place with 28 points. The two teams will square off again tomorrow night at the Santa Ana Star Center, with game time set for 8:15 PM CST. The game can be heard on 1010 AM The Canyon, starting at 8:00 PM with pre-game coverage.
