Rayz Double Up Killer Bees 6-3

In the biggest game of the season to date, the Corpus Christi Rayz had no holiday hangover Friday Night visiting the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Corpus Christi exploded for a season-high six goals in a 6-3 win over the Bees. The win vaulted the Rayz to 10-14-3 and widened the gap to three points ahead of Rio Grande Valley for second place in the Southeast Division and fifth place in the Southern Conference. Corpus Christi earned their first regulation win over Rio Grande Valley this season. The Rayz continue their two game set in the Valley on Saturday Night at 7:35pm. The Rayz then return to the American Bank Center on New Year's Eve when they host the Austin Ice Bats at 8:05pm. Individual Tickets are on sale now. Facing a team struggling on defense, the Rayz wanted to get to the Bees net early, and did just that. Special teams took over for Corpus Christi who erupted for three power play goals to take a lead in the first period. The Rayz struck first when Kevin Watters redirected a shot from the right wall at 7:03. Rio Grande tied the score on a Jeremy Van Hoof slapshot from the blue line at 9:09. The Bees then took their first lead when Travis Bunga tallied from the right circle on a two-on-one rush at 11:32. The Rayz power play responded at 13:36 to tie the score when Niko Tuomi scored on a slapshot from the blue line. Geno Parrish capped the first period scoring with a perfectly placed wrist shot from the right point that snuck through traffic and just underneath the right elbow of the post and crossbar. Brent Howarth had assists on all three goals and the Rayz outshot Rio Grande 12-11 in the first. Corpus took a 3-2 lead into the second period.

The Rayz continued their offensive onslaught in the second period. A.J. Bozoian made it 4-2 Rayz with a wrist shot from the right circle at 2:01. After the goal, the Bees pulled David Lemanowicz who made nine saves on 13 shots. The Rayz then made it 5-2 at 12:22 when Joe Blaznek beat Jeff Van Nynatten from the right circle. The Killer Bees got back on the board when Ladislav Kouba scored at 13:19 to make the score 5-3 Rayz. However, Derek Smith scored on a rebound goal at 19:31 to give the Rayz a 6-3 cushion heading into the third period. The Rayz outshot the Bees 19-9 in the frame.

In the third period the Bees put Lemanowicz back in the net and neither team scored, as Corpus Christi held on for the victory.

Tapp made 31 saves on 34 shots to improve to 10-12-2. Jeff Van Nynatten made 16 saves on 18 shots and did not figure into the decision. Lemanowicz made 17 saves on 21 shots fell to 4-8-1. The Rayz went 3-4 on the power play, and the Bees were 0-4. The Rayz outshot the Bees 39-34.
