New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Amarillo came to New Mexico after the holiday break and handed the Scorps a 4-1 loss. The Gorillas victory stopped the Scorpions' seven game home point streak.

Amarillo got on the board early in the first period. David Nimmo broke through the Scorpions defense and gave his team the lead at the 5:03 mark. Bill Vandermeer increased the lead when his rebound goal found the net at the 7:53 mark of the first period.

The Scorpions called a time out to regroup and it paid off. Michael Kolarz found a streaking Andrew Smale who had open ice in front of him. Smale broke free and scored the breakaway goal cutting the deficit to one.

The Gorillas went back on the offensive late in the period with a power play chance. Nimmo scored his second goal of the game and gave his team a 3-1 lead heading into the locker room.

Things were pretty quiet the rest of the way on both sides. Vandermeer added an early third period insurance goal, to finish the night's scoring.

The Scorpions will host the Gorillas again tomorrow night at the Santa Ana Star Center . The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. and the first 1,500 fans inside the gate receive cowbells courtesy of Chick-fil-A.
