Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas tough start to the 2007-08 season continued on Friday night, as they fell for the second time to the New Mexico Scorpions this season, by a final score of 3-2. Amarillo was coming off their first win of the season, when they beat Colorado 5-4 in a shootout last Saturday night, but they could not parlay that momentum into a second straight win as they fall to 1-6-2 on the season.

The Gorillas took the lead in the contest, getting a goal from Matt Miller in the first period at the 16:44 mark. Miller got his second goal of the season on the power-play, with help from Trevor Read. Miller's strong play of late continued, as he now has six points in his last three games. The Gorillas would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first period.

Then things began to go south for Amarillo, as they would give up three consecutive goals to the Scorpions, starting with Konrad Reeder's goal at 4:17 of the second frame. Reeder had two shorthanded goals, the only scored by New Mexico, in last Friday night's game in Amarillo. The Scorpions would add another goal at the end of the second period, when Blair Stayzer scored at the 18:35 mark, putting New Mexico up 2-1 going into the final period.

The Scorpions momentum would carry over into the third period, as they would continue to pressure goaltender Dan Bauer, who made his second start this season in net for Amarillo. It took Kevin Harvey only 4:44 into the third period to put the Scorpions up 3-1, as his goal would wind up being the eventual game-winner. Amarillo fought back getting a short-handed goal from Grant Selinger at the 6:23 mark of the period, but could not get another puck past Scorpions netminder Mike Minard for the rest of the game. Amarillo would pull their goaltender for an extra attacker late in regulation, but could not pull even at any point.

The Gorillas moved to 1-6-2 on the year, and with only four points on the year, they continue to occupy the bottom spot in the Southwest Division. Amarillo will travel to Broomfield, Colorado to take on the Rocky Mountain Rage tomorrow night at 8:05 CST.
