Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Rick Kozak and Chad Woollard both scored in the third period to lead the Mississippi RiverKings over the Oklahoma City Blazers 4-2 last night at the DeSoto Civic Center.
To open the final term, Kozak skated down the right wing and faked a forehand shot. He then went to the backhand and walked out from the corner across the goalmouth and slipped the puck past Sean Connors to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead just 31 seconds into the period.
For Kozak, that was his 18th goal in 26 games with the 'Kings dating back to last season.
Chad Woollard scored on a shot-pass from Ryan Campbell on an odd-man rush with 3:39 remaining to seal the win for the RiverKings, who improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Blazers got the first goal of the game on the power play from D.J. Jelitto at 10:47 of the opening frame. Connors made 14 saves in the first period to keep them in front, but the RiverKings scored 44 seconds into the middle period. Following a save from Connors on a 2-on-1, Aaron Davis fired the puck at the goal from the right corner. The puck hit Connors in the back of the leg and trickled over the goal line to tie the game.
The RiverKings took the lead at 4:08 of the second period, as Derek Landmesser took a no-look backhand pass from Louis Dumont from behind the goal. Landmesser skated in from his right point position to light the lamp and give the 'Kings their first lead of the night.
The Blazers tied the game midway through the second when Michael Kaye scored on a great individual effort. Kaye deposited the puck through Larry Sterling's 5-hole to make it 2-2 after 40, but the Blazers never took the lead again.
Sterling made 21 saves and earned the win for the RiverKings. Connors played well, but took the loss with 35 saves.
The RiverKings host the Blazers again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
