A Perfect 10: Bucks Tie CHL Record With Win Over Rayz LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-4 in front of 4,490 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center Friday night. With the win the Bucks tied the CHL record for most consecutive wins to start a season with 10. The Bucks will look to break the record Saturday night when they host Youngstown.
The Bucks (10-0-0) jumped out to a early lead in the first period when Jeff Bes scored his ninth-goal of the season to put Laredo up 1-0. James Hiebert and Steve Simoes picked up assists on the tally. The Bucks took a 2-0 lead at the 11:05 mark when Chris Korchinski scored on a power-play, putting in a rebound past Rayz goaltender Kevin Couture. Rane Carnegie and Brent MacSween picked up assists.
The Rayz then scored two straight goals to tie the game, and quiet the LEC crowd. Corpus Christi made it 2-1 at the 11:32 mark when Jon Jankus scored. The Rayz tied the game at two, at the 15:16 mark when Bret Howarth snuck a shot past Bucks goalie Dustin Traylen, tying the game at 2.
The Bucks took a 3-2 lead at the 17:49 mark of the first period when captain Serge Dube poked in a power-play goal. It was Dube's third goal of the season. Carnegie and Bes picked up assists.
The Bucks increased their lead to 4-2 early in the second period as Carnegie scored his fifth goal of the season from the right circle. Korchinski picked up the assist on the goal.
The Rayz pulled to within 4-3 at the 2:24 mark of the third period when Joe Blaznek scored from the right side of the crease. Laredo made it 5-3 at 8:12 when James Hiebert knocked in his eighth goal of the season. Steve Simoes and Bes were given assists on the goal. Corpus Christi (2-6-1) made it 5-4 with just 50 seconds left in the third period when Jason Baird scored with an extra-attacker on the ice for the Rayz. The Bucks held on for the final 50 seconds of the game with the Rayz net empty.
Traylen improved his record this season to 6-0, making him the only Bucks goaltender to win his first six starts of the season. Traylen made 13 saves in the Laredo net.
Carnegie and Bes both had a goal and two assists, with Hiebert and Korchinski scoring a goal and adding an assist.
The Bucks win puts them at 10-0, joining the 2002-03 Austin Ice Bats and the 1996-97 New Mexico Scorpions of the then WPHL in the record book. Both Austin and New Mexico lost their 11th game of the season.
Laredo will look to break the CHL record for most consecutive victories to start a season Saturday night when they host Northern Conference leading Youngstown. The Steelhounds come into the game at 8-0-1. The game will feature the only two CHL teams without a regulation loss.
There will be a jersey auction following Saturday night's game against the Steelhounds.
