Gorillas Grab Decisive Victory in Odessa

Amarillo, TX 11/14/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas improved to 3-1-0 in their last four games with a 6-2 victory against the Odessa Jackalopes at the Ector County Coliseum Friday night.

In their first road victory of the season, Sam Ftorek got the goal scoring started with a lazer from the point less than two minutes into the first period. Joe Guenther followed the goal up moments later with one of his own, with Ftorek and new Gorillas acquisition John Snowden assisting on the tally. Guenther scored with under 1:30 on the clock in the first as well, netting a power play goal to put Amarillo up 3-0 after twenty minutes.

Odessa got two quick goals (through Brian Swiniarski and Mike Lesperance) in the second period to draw the Jackalopes to within one. However, Gordon Bell answered the two Odessa goals with one of his own just 34 seconds later, backhanding a shot through a Jake Morissette screen to put Amarillo back up by two, 4-2. The Gorillas scored again with less than a minute in the second, when Jamie McKinuen wristed a rebound past Juha Toivonen. The goal was McKinuen's first, coming in his first game with the Gorillas after joining the team moments before the squad departed for Odessa earlier in the day.

Snowden finished off the scoring in the third period with his fourth tally of the season, solidifying the 6-2 win. Former Jackalope Mike Gorman (2-1-0) got the win in net for Amarillo (4-7-0), stopping 30 of 32 Jackalopes shots. Amarillo will take on the Corpus Christi IceRays Saturday night in southern Texas, as they continue their six0game road trip. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM; the game can be heard in the Amarillo area on 1010 AM ‘The Canyon' or viewed for free online through the live coverage of the CHL Network.
