Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - On a night that saw former defenseman and current assistant coach Dan Laperriere's number-6 jersey retired to the rafters inside Tim's Toyota Center, the Arizona Sundogs exploded for four second period goals and rookie forward Peter Cartwright collected his club's first hat trick of the season en route to a 7-1 win, more resembling the championship club of last season than that of early this season. Phoenix Coyotes prospect Joel Gistedt collected his first win of the season stopping 22 of 23 shots.

Arizona dominated play in the first period Friday night, outshooting the expansion Rush 16-6 in the initial frame and building a 2-0 lead with goals by Mark Kolanos and Joel Irving. The Sundogs received a 5-on-3 power play for 1:41 midway through the period after Stephen Cooke and Jamie VanderVeeken elbowing and hooking calls but Rush netminder Lanny Ramage stood tall in net to keep Arizona off the scoreboard. Playing down a man eventually caught up with Rapid City as Mark Kolanos collected his team-leading seventh goal of the year on his club's fourth power play of the period. Defensive partners Jon Landry and Chris Bartolone tallied assists on the Kolanos marker with 6:37 to play. Joel Irving ended his four-game pointless streak to give his club a two-goal lead with just 39 seconds to play in the first, maneuvering through the Rush defense and beating Ramage with a low shot glove side. Defensemen Kyle Hood and Matt Suderman were credited with helpers on the late-period goal.

The Sundogs picked up where they left off in the opening 20 minutes to take a 6-1 lead into the second intermission, scoring four goals before Rich Hansen got his club on the board late in the period. Rookie forward Peter Cartwright pushed the score to 3-0 in favor of Arizona on a 3-on-1 rush with his first of two second period goals. Goaltender Joel Gistedt sent a pass the length of the ice to Tyler Liebel who fed a centering pass to Andre Selander. Cartwright trailed the play and sent a one-timer past the sprawled-out goalie 1:56 into the period. Just shy of the ten-minute mark, Irving netted his second of the game with his team on the penalty kill to open a four-goal cushion. Irving gained the offensive zone and beat Ramage with a wrap around attempt from Liebel for the Sundogs' second shorthanded goal of the season. Cartwright grabbed his second of the game six minutes later from Derek Legault and Selander to give his club its biggest lead of the year. With the period winding down, Arizona continued to pepper Ramage with scoring chances and Mark Kolanos capitalized 1:41 later to give the Sundogs a commanding 6-0 lead. Suderman registered his second assist of the night and fourth of the year, sending a shot on net from the point. Kolanos grabbed the rebound and lifted it into the net for his second of the contest. Hood was also credited with an assist on the play. After allowing six goals on 26 shots, Rush Head Coach and General Manager Joe Ferras replaced Ramage with backup goaltender Miguel Beaudry. Rapid City's Hansen ended Gistedt's shutout bid with a shorthanded goal from Chris Lipsett with 39 seconds remaining in the period to cut into the Sundogs' lead.

Cartwright capped-off the hat trick effort with his third of the game from Rob Lehtinen and Jason Visser at 9:40 of the third period for the final 7-1 score. Tempers flared in the final 25 minutes Friday night as six separate fights amounted to 109 total penalty minutes and four misconducts.

Gistedt blocked 22 of 23 shots to improve to 1-3-0 on the year while Ramage suffered the loss, stopping 20 of 26 in 37:34 of play. Beaudry turned aside 4 of 5 shots in the relief appearance. The Sundogs finished 1-for-4 with the man advantage while holding the Rush scoreless on five power play opportunities. With the win, Arizona improves to 5-6-1 on the season and again moves into a tie for second place with New Mexico in the Southwest Division. The Sundogs sit just four points back of division-leader Odessa.
