
Bucks Bring The Thunder, Win 2-1

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Wichita Thunder 2-1 Friday night, in front of 5,012 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks won their second straight game to improve their division leading record to 7-4 (14pts).
Steve Weidlich scored the game-winning goal with 8:38 left in the game, and rookie goaltender Ryan Gibb stopped 20 of 21 shots to earn his second win of the season.
Laredo was victorious despite trailing after two periods, 1-0.
The Bucks (5-2 at home) caught a break and tied the game 5:12 into the third period, when they took advantage of a Wichita turnover. Alex Goupil stole the puck from Thunder goaltender Krister Toews behind the net, and found a wide-open Bobby Russell at the top of the crease to jam the puck into the wide open net. Russell picked up his second goal of the season, with Goupil, who was playing against his former team, picking up hs seventh assist.
Laredo would take the lead when they struck on the power-play with 8:38 remaining in the game. Darryl Smith sent a laser pass across the ice to Steve Weidlich, who was waiting at the top of the left circle, and then sent a one-timer past Toews. Weidlich tallied his first goal of the year, with Smith (5) and Jeff Bes (15) picking up assists. Bes leads the CHL with 15 helpers, and has 299 in his Laredo career.
The Thunder (3-7-1, 7pts) emptied their net for the final 1:30 of the game, which led to a six-on-four power-play for the final 11 seconds thanks to a Laredo penalty. But the Bucks won the face-off and cleared the puck the length of the ice to seal the win.
The Bucks failed to score first for just the third time this season, as the Thunder jumped out in front late in the opening period. Wichita's Jordan Hack knocked in a rebound on the right side of the crease past Bucks rookie goaltender Ryan Gibb. Gibb made the initial kick save, but Hack picked up the rebound and stuffed it in for his second tally of the season.
Laredo has a couple of scoring chances in the first period, but came up empty as were 0-for-three on the power-play.
The Bucks outshot the Thunder in the first 20 minutes 14-8.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in a scoreless second period.
Laredo had a five-on-three power-play for 1:26 late in the middle period, but came up empty. During that two-man advantage, the Bucks hit a crossbar, and had two quality scoring chances stopped by Krister Toews.
The Bucks outshot the Thunder for the second straight period, this time by a count of 12-8.
Laredo outshot Wichita for the game 38-21.
