Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - Though they held the lead at three different points throughout the game, the Amarillo Gorillas allowed three unanswered goals to drop their road contest Saturday night to the Corpus Christi IceRays, 5-4.
In a game pock-marked by chippiness and late third period penalties, the Gorillas got an early goal from Jason Weitzel to take the initial 1-0 lead. After Corpus Christi tied the game with a Adam Powell tally, Stuart MacRae scored with a little over a minute left in the first period to re-claim the one-goal Amarillo lead.
Corpus Christi would take control of the second period, however, sandwiching a Jamie McKinven powerplay goal for Amarillo with goals from Powell, Mike Zbriger, and Nicolas Bachand to lead entering the third period, 4-3.
The IceRays extended their third period lead with an early third-period goal from Ryan Bennett, making the score 5-3. With under five minutes to play in the third, it appeared as though Stuart MacRae scored on Corpus goaltender Dustin Traylen, knocking a rebound past the netminder. However, officials disallowed the goal after a long discussion, confirming that the goal appeared to be kicked into the Corpus Christi net. Just 21 seconds later, Weitzel scored again to bring the Gorillas to within one, 5-4.
Despite a late power play, Amarillo could pull no closer as the IceRays held tough to pull out the one-goal victory. Ryan Scott (2-4-0) took the loss in net for Amarillo (4-8-0), allowing five goals on 26 shots. The Gorillas will play next at Oklahoma City next Thursday, with a 7:10 PM scheduled start time.
