Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 1/11/08 - Amarillo was beaten in a shootout by the Corpus Christi Rayz on Friday night, by a final score of 5-4 at the Amarillo Civic Center. The Gorillas would fight back from down 2-0 going into the third period, to finally tie it up 4-4 at 18:18 of the final frame off of Bill Vandermeer's power-play goal. Amarillo could only secure one point however, as they were beat in the shootout as Corpus Christi scored on their first three attempts, and the Gorillas could not convert on any of their three.
Nicklas Lindberg would score twice in the second for Corpus, putting them up 2-0 with his second and third tallies of the year.
Amarillo's first goal came at 4:18 of period three, as David Nimmo scored on the power-play, breaking out of a six game scoreless streak in the process. Lindberg's third goal would stretch the Rayz lead back to two, before Austin Sutter scored for the Gorillas at 8:21 to bring the score back to 3-2. Joe Blaznek would re-capture the Rayz two goal lead, making it 4-2 off his twelfth of the season at 13:46. Once again, Amarillo would fight back as Nimmo got his second goal of the game, and Bill Vandermeer capped off the comeback getting his twelfth goal of the year to send the game into overtime.
Both teams would exchange chances in the overtime, but Rays goalie Jason Tapp and Amarillo net-minder Dan Bauer would turn aside everything they saw, sending the game into a shootout. The Gorillas could not convert on any of their first three chances, while the Rayz scored on each of theirs, effectively ending the shootout after just three rounds. The game-winning goal was credited to Kevin Watters.
Amarillo will be at home again tomorrow night to host the Odessa Jackalopes, then again next weekend for games against the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday, and Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
