
Rayz outlast Gorillas 5-4 in SO

The Corpus Christi Rayz held off a late Amarillo Gorillas charge Friday Night for a 5-4 shootout victory. Nick Lindberg led the way with the Rayz first hat trick of the season, and Corpus Christi rebounded from allowing four third period goals, to earn their first win in Amarillo since 2001. The Rayz swept the two-game series with Amarillo, winning both games in a shootout, and picked up points for the eighth time in the last ten games. Corpus Christi improved to 14-16-4 on the year. The Rayz moved six points ahead of the Gorillas for fifth place in the Southern Conference. The Rayz return to the American Bank Center on Friday, January 18th at 7:05pm when they host the Austin Ice Bats on 80's Night, presented by CPL Retail Energy. Individual tickets are on sale now. The Gorillas outshot the Rayz 16-9 in a scoreless first period to open the game. The scoreless frame marked the second straight game for Corpus Christi and second in as many against Amarillo that the teams posted zeros in the opening period.
The Rayz broke the scoreless tie on a power play 6:23 into the second period. Jay Latulippe fed Nick Lindberg in the right circle and Lindberg snapped a wrist shot into the top right corner to give the Rayz a 1-0 lead. Lindberg then made it 2-0 on a one-timer from the right circle on a later power play at 16:39. The Rayz outshot the Gorillas 12-10 in the period and took a 2-0 lead into the third.
The gorillas threw everything they had at the Rayz in a wild third period. Amarillo got four goals, including three on a power play to force overtime. David Nimmo scored twice, with Austin Sutter and Bill Vandemeer getting the other two. Lindberg got his third of the night along with a Joe Blaznek tally for the Rayz.
After a scoreless overtime, the Rayz scored on three shots in a shootout and Jason Tapp stopped all three shooters he faced to preserve the win.
Tapp made 49 saves on 53 shots and stopped climbed over .500 at 14-13-3. Bauer made 24 saves on 28 shots, falling to 4-4-2. The Rayz went 3-6 on the power play, and the Gorillas were 3-7. The Gorillas outshot the Rayz 53-29.
The Rayz will conclude their weekend on the road with a Saturday Night visit to Oklahoma City at 7:30pm. The game can be heard on the Rayz flagship radio station ESPN 1230AM. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center following the All-Star break on Friday, January 18th when they host the Austin Ice Bats on 80's Night, presented by CPL Retail Energy.
