Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Laredo Bucks faced off in their final regular season matchup Friday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center in Laredo, Texas. Arizona jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period but Laredo battled back and the two teams traded goals throughout the game to force an overtime session and eventual shootout. Matt Summers proved to be the hero for Laredo, tallying the game winner in round six of the sudden death shootout for the 6-5 win.
Tyler Redenbach gave his club an early 1-0 lead on a pass from Alex Leavitt just 2:06 in. The two teamed up again at the 15:07 mark as Leavitt found the back of the net on passes from Redenbach and rookie Dusty Collins to open a two-goal cushion. Laredo answered back with their first tally of the night 64 seconds later to make the score 2-1 Arizona. Igor Agarunov beat netminder Andrew Gallant for his sixth of the year on passes from Jeff Bes and Andrew Desjardins.
Barely two minutes passed in the second frame before the Sundogs regained a two-goal advantage. Olivier Latendresse collected his 16th goal of the year from Karl Sellan and defenseman David Schlemko. At 6:54 of the period, Desjardins notched his second point of the game, solving Gallant on the powerplay to cut Arizona's lead back to one. James Hiebert and Bes assisted on the powerplay marker. Just past the halfway point, Laredo tied the game at 3-3 on a Serge Dube tally from Bes and Desjardins, their third points of the night. Three minutes later, Leavitt gathered his second goal of the night for a 4-3 Sundogs lead. Redenbach collected his third point of the night with Jon Landry assisting on Leavitt's second tally.
Three goals would be tallied in the first two minutes of the third period. Laredo struck first at the 58 second mark to even the score at 4-4. Agarunov collected his second marker of the game and his club's second powerplay goal with helpers going to Paul Elliott and Matt Summers. Arizona answered back less than a minute later as Sellan took passes from Latendresse and Tyler Liebel to give the visiting Sundogs a 5-4 lead. Just 20 seconds would expire before the Bucks would once again pull even. Rane Carnegie put the puck past Gallant with Chris Korchinski collecting an assist to tie the game at five goals apiece. Neither team scored in the final 18 minutes to force overtime for the second time in as many games between the two Southern Conference teams.
Arizona dominated in scoring chances in the extra session, outshooting Laredo by a 6-2 mark. Both goalies were up to the challenge however and a shootout resulted. Arizona Head Coach.GM Marco Pietroniro replaced Andrew Gallant with Bill Zaniboni in the shootout. Latendresse and Sellan converted in the shootout for Arizona while Jeff Bes, Andrew Desjardins and Matt Summers tallied for Laredo for the 6-5 win.
Andrew Gallant appeared in net for Arizona through 65 minutes of play and stopped 28 of 33 shots while John Ceci blocked 27 of 32 shots for the win. Backup netminder Bill Zaniboni suffered the loss after allowing the game-winning goal in the shootout. The Sundogs were held scoreless with the man advantage Friday night, finishing 0-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Bucks converted on two of four powerplay chances.
Despite the shootout loss, Arizona (20-9-4) sits one point ahead of second place Odessa in the Southwest Division. The Sundogs now head to Austin for a Saturday night matchup against the Southeast Division Ice Bats. Game time is set for 6:38pm and can be heard live on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
