Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
HIDALGO, TX - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs tied the franchise record with their 12th consecutive win on Friday night, beating Rio Grande Valley 5-1. The victory gives the Mudbugs a five-point lead in the Northeast Division and ties the team mark set by the 1998-99 President's Cup Champion Shreveport Mudbugs.
Brett Smith and Kevin Cooper scored two goals each and Joe Ori added a goal and an assist as Bossier-Shreveport started off it's season-high seven game road trip with a bang.
It didn't take long for the âBugs to take the lead in this one, as Cooper scored his first of the night just 3:41 in. Cooper cut around a Killer Bee defenseman from the corner to the front, where he was all alone to beat Jeff Van Nynatten with a wrist shot for a 1-0 lead. Rio Grande Valley would answer back though, with a powerplay goal right off a faceoff. Mike Tuomi rifled a wrister just under the crossbar past Ken Carroll just after the draw to tie the score at one for the Killer Bees.
The Mudbugs' powerplay was the difference in the second period. First, it was Brett Smith crashing the net and redirecting Chris Brassard's pass from the boards into the net for his eleventh goal of the year, giving the Mudbugs a 2-1 lead. A short time later, Nick Warriner was hauled down from behind on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Warriner never even got a shot on goal though, as Carroll played the shot perfectly and forced Warriner wide of the net. Then on a powerplay late in the second period, the Mudbugs scored the back-breaker against Rio Grande Valley . As time was about to expire, any Mudbug with the puck tried to get it toward the net. The rebound from Joe Ori's sharp-angle shot came free to Cooper, who tucked it home to give the Mudbugs a 3-1 lead with just .02 seconds showing on the clock. The goal tied Cooper for the team lead with 14 goals on the year and marked his fifth two-goal game of the season.
The Killer Bees didn't get much going offensively in the third period, as Bossier-Shreveport added to the lead. First Ori finished off a nice passing play with Daniel Pegoraro to make it 4-1 and then Smith beat Van Nynatten with a wrist shot from along the boards to make it a 5-1 Mudbugs victory.
Ken Carroll stopped 22 shots to win his ninth consecutive start and advance his record to 10-3-1. Carroll's CHL-best goals-against average now sits at 1.80. Bossier-Shreveport finished the night with a 40-23 shot edge, and also converted 2 of 5 powerplay chances. Rio Grande Valley was 1 for 5 on the man advantage.
Up next for the Mudbugs is a short drive just up the road to Laredo, where they will battle the Bucks tomorrow night at the Laredo Entertainment Center . Laredo is coming off a shootout victory over Arizona on Friday night and boasts the highest point total in the CHL with 54. Puck drop is set for 7:30, which means the pre-game show on Newsradio 710 AM KEEL will begin at 7:10. The game will also be streamed live on the internet through the CHL Network.
