Gonsolin, Mallards Cruise to Victory in Series Finale against Bullfrogs
August 1, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - Field manager Donnie Scott and the Madison Mallards (16-11, 36-26) ignited for an 18-for-44 (.409) performance at the plate with three doubles en route to a convincing 19-3 victory over the Green Bay Bullfrogs (15-14, 37-27) Friday night at Joannes Stadium. Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) earned Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison 'Big Win' Player of the night honors for the Mallards, going 4-for-6 with a season-high six runs batted in. The victory salvaged a series split in Green Bay for Madison, who now owns sole possession of second place in the South Division standings.
Friday evening began on an uneven note for the Mallards, who found themselves facing a 3-0 deficit on the road after the Bullfrogs plated three runners between the first and third innings. Madison's fortunes changed swiftly. Gonsolin and Jason Goldstein (Illinois) tabbed RBI at-bats in the top of the fourth, after which Gonsolin and Logan Regnier (Central Michigan) and each drove home runs in the top of the fifth to claim a 5-3 lead. A four-run, top of the seventh ensued prior to exploding for ten runs in the ninth, which provided more than enough offense to secure the convincing victory.
Every hitter to appear for the Mallards reached base safely at least once in Friday night's victory. Aside from Gonsolin's sterling performance, Regnier went 4-for-7 with four runs scored and two runs driven in to stimulate Madison's white-hot lineup, while Jonathan Quintana (Barry University) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and one batted in. Matt McCann (Fairleigh Dickson) secured his first multi-hit game in green and yellow, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two driven in. Charlie Cody (Virginia) supplied a double and three runs scored from the No. 9 spot in Madison's order.
Justin Watts (Northern Kentucky) recorded his third winning decision of the summer for the Mallards Friday night, tossing 3.1 shutout innings of relief for starting pitcher A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina), who lasted 3.2 innings and allowed three runs to touch home. Watts, a 6-foot-3 right hander from Bryan, Ohio, struck out three, walked none and allowed just one hit in the series finale, increasing his lofty strikeout total to 14 in just 10 innings with the Mallards bullpen in 2015. Brandon White (South Suburban CC) contributed with scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth with two whiffs.
The Mallards will return to the Duck Pond tomorrow (Saturday, August 1) against the Wisconsin Woodchucks (10-17, 22-40). Tomorrow will feature The Diamond Center Diamond Dig post-game, ice-cream scoop giveaway as well as a free Kids Clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. presented by Zimbrick-Honda. For game tickets or inquiries regarding Saturday's Kids Clinic, call the Mallards Ticket Office at 608-246-4277 or visit www.MallardsBaseball.com for more information.
