Syracuse, NY - On a rare off day for the Syracuse pitching staff, the Mets allowed a season-high 14 runs in a 14-3 loss to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Sunday afternoon in front of 5,494 fans at NBT Bank Stadium. Despite the loss, Carlós Gomez hit a two-run home run for the second straight game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (15-12) jumped out with a five-run top of the first inning. Mike Ford and Ryan McBroom each singled with one out. Mickey Jannis threw a wild pitch allowing the runners to move up, and then on a strike three pitch to Brad Miller, Ford scored on a passed ball on Colton Plaia for a 1-0 lead. Miller reached first on the play. Jannis then threw two more wild pitches over the next at-bat, one allowing McBroom to score, the other moving Miller to third. Kyle Higashioka then singled into right field to push Miller across for a 3-0 lead. Zack Zehner followed with a two-run home run for a 5-0 edge.
Syracuse (17-13) scored a run in the bottom of the first. Rajai Davis led off with a single, stole his team-leading 11th base of the season, and then moved to third base on a groundout. Davis scored when Luis Guillorme grounded out to second base to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.
The RailRiders added three more runs in the third. Miller walked, and Higashioka homered over the left-field fence for a 7-1 lead. From there, Manny Alvarez reached on a two-base error on Dilson Herrera at third. Alvarez moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zehner for an 8-1 RailRiders edge.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre piled on in the fourth. Trey Amburgey singled, Ford singled, and Miller walked to load the bases. Higashioka followed with his second home run of the day, a grand slam to left field to push the lead to 12-1. Alvarez continued the inning with a double, and Zehner singled, putting runners on first and third. Billy Fleming then singled to center to score Alvarez and make it a 14-3 ballgame. P.J. Conlon came out of the Mets bullpen, and after a fly out, Amburgey doubled to center, his second hit of the inning, scoring Zehner to cap off the six-run fourth and 14-1 score.
The Mets scored a pair of late runs with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and Guillorme at first base, Gómez hit a two-run home run over the left-center field wall, trimming the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 14-3.
Syracuse is off on Monday before traveling to Louisville on Tuesday for the first game of a three-game series against the Bats. First pitch on Tuesday night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
