Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (6-10) were defeated 6-4 by the Lincoln Saltdogs Sunday afternoon at Haymarket Park.
Lincoln (11-3) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Omar Artsen scored on a fielding error and Hunter Clanin came home on a single to left field by Garett Delano.
The Saltdogs added four more runs in the fourth inning. First Artsen doubled to centre field to bring home Eddy Julio Martinez and Sherman Graves. Then Delano tripled to score Clanin and Artsen.
The Goldeyes made it 6-1 in the fifth inning when Deon Stafford Jr. crossed the plate on a Reggie Pruitt Jr. groundout to shortstop.
Winnipeg added closed to within three runs of the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Andrew Martinez smacked his second home run of the season - a two-run shot to left field that also scored Stafford Jr.
Logan Hill led off the top of the ninth inning with a towering home run to left field, his fifth of the season, to cut Lincoln's lead to 6-4. However, that was all the Goldeyes could muster in their final at-bat of the game.
Greg Minier (1-1) earned the victory with a one run, two hit performance over six innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. RJ Martinez (2-1) was charged with the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in three-and-two-thirds innings. The rookie left-hander struck out a season-high eight batters. Martinez, Jose Vasquez, and Jaylen Smith combined to fan 16 Lincoln batters.
Having concluded a ten-game road trip, the Goldeyes return home to face the Cleburne Railroaders in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Shaw Park. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at cjnu.ca.
