Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Kansas City, KS - Sioux Falls struck for two early runs in the top of the first inning but Kansas City answered with four in the home half and wouldn't trail again en route to a 14-8 victory in the series finale on Sunday.

The Birds loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning for Trey Michalczewski to deliver a two-run double. The Monarchs answered with a David Thompson RBI single in the home half before Jan Hernandez blasted a three-run homerun.

Kona Quiggle got the Birds within a run in the top of the third when he laced a solo homerun over the centerfield fence but former big leaguer Matt Adams responded with a two-run shot in the home half.

Kansas City would add four more runs before Sioux Falls loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning. That's when Shamoy Christopher cleared the bases with a double to get the Birds within 10-6.

But the Monarchs got those three runs back in the home half, which included a second Hernandez round-tripper. Willie Abreu belted a solo shot an inning later and the score held until the ninth inning.

Down to their final out, Ozzie Martinez doubled home Wyatt Ulrich and then scored on a Quiggle triple but the Birds could get no closer.

Michalczewski led the Sioux Falls offense with a 3-5 effort while Ulrich, Martinez and Quiggle each finished with two hits. Starting pitcher Neil Lang allowed nine runs on ten hits in 3.2 innings and struck out.

Sioux Falls is now 5-11 and gets set to open a three-game series at Chicago on Tuesday.
