Goldeyes Set New Wins Record with Victory in Sioux Falls

August 29, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have one more chance to reach 60 wins.

Of course, even if they don't, the Goldeyes will finish the 2011 season with more victories than in any other single season in the team's history.

Last night in Sioux Falls, Goldeyes catcher Luis Alen homered, doubled and drove in three runs as he led the Fish to an 8-5 victory over the Sioux Falls Pheasants.

The win didn't make any difference in the American Association's North Division standings - the Goldeyes already wrapped up the pennant last Friday night - but it did improve Winnipeg's record to 59-40 and gave manager Rick Forney a shot at 60 wins, in this the season in which he was named manager of the year. The Goldeyes and Pheasants will wrap up the regular season in Sioux Falls on Tuesday night.

For Forney, who mentioned the 60-win plateau on Friday evening, the goal is more symbolic than anything else. Still, Forney thought it would be fitting that this team, a group he's called "the best team I've managed in Winnipeg," could be the first Goldeyes team ever to reach 60 wins in a season.

Regardless, the Fish will open the playoffs on Thursday night at Shaw Park.

Monday night, the Goldeyes got a solid start from Chris Salamida and a good effort from the bullpen, while the offense pounded out 10 hits, built a 6-2 lead after two and a half innings and put a halt to a two-game losing skid.

The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the first inning. With two out, Brian Myrow walked, Jon Weber doubled and then Luis Alen doubled to drive in Myrow and Weber and the Fish had a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Louis Ott singled and then went to third when Fehlandt Lentini was safe on an error. Ridge Carpenter was then hit by a pitch, but a throwing error on Pheasants' catcher Matt Powell allowed Ott to score. Kody Kaiser drive home Lentini with a single and the Goldeyes went ahead 4-0.

After Sioux Falls scored twice in the bottom of the second, the Goldeyes added two more runs in the third when Weber singled and later scored on a ground out by Ott and Wes Long singled and scored on an error by Sioux Falls pitcher Adam Cowart.

In the fifth, Luis Alen hit his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot that made it 7-3, and in the eighth Ott walked and later scored on a single by Price Kendall.

Sioux Falls scored a couple of run the bottom of the eighth, but closer Jamie Vermilyea shut the door once again in the bottom of the ninth.

Salamida (11-4, 3.82) pitched six complete innings and allowed three runs on five hits to earn the victory. Sioux Falls starter Adam Cowart (5-8, 6.33) suffered the loss. Vermilyea recorded his 17th save of the season.

Tuesday night, the Goldeyes play their final game of the regular season in Sioux Falls. Game time is 7 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290.

Thursday night, the Goldeyes will open the 2011 post-season by playing host to the Gary SouthShore RailCats or St. Paul Saints. If St. Paul beats Gary tomorrow night, the Saints will be the first round opponent.
