
Amarillo Sox Cruz Named Player of the Year

DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Baseball announced today that Amarillo Sox outfielder Lee Cruz has been named the league's Player of the Year as voted on by American Association managers and media personnel.
Cruz currently is hitting .345 with 18 homeruns and 94 RBI, which leads the Sox. His batting average is currently sixth in the league among active players, while he eighth in homeruns and second in RBI. Additionally, he is second in the league in hits (143), first in total bases (241), tied for first in doubles (38), first in extra base hits (59), and fifth in slugging percentage (.581).
The 6-2, 190 lbs right-hander out of St. Louis, Missouri is also one of only two players in the league to play every single game. The other is David Espinosa of the Grand Prairie Airhogs. The 28 year-old was originally drafted in the 10th round of the 2006 draft by the Chicago White Sox. Cruz spent five seasons in the minor leagues with the White Sox until being released last year and spending most of 2010 with Yuma in the Golden League.
Cruz was named the Batter of the Week in the American Association by Pointstreak, the official league statistician, for the first week of the season on May 22.
This accolade is the first American Association award received by the Sox in their first year in the league. For more information on this announcement, contact the Sox office.
