August 4, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The league-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes took the opening game of a three-game set from the Joliet JackHammers tonight, doing so to the tune of 13-1 before a crowd of 7,124 at Canwest Park.

Winnipeg opened the scoring off Rory Shortell with one out in the first when Josh Asanovich hit the first pitch he saw deep to left for his 5th home run. Two batters later, Kevin West made it 2-0 with his 18th home run. The hosts added to their lead in the second. Dee Brown led off with his 12th home run, Cody Ehlers doubled, Adam Frost singled and Dustin Richardson walked to load the bases. Cory Patton singled to score Ehlers, Asanovich banged into a double play that forced Frost at home before Juan Diaz hit his league-leading 20th home run to make it 7-0. Winnipeg added to its lead in the fourth and chased Shortell in the process.

Patton drew a lead-off walk and went to third on an Asanovich double. After getting the next two hitters, Shortell was given the hook when Brent Metheny singled to make it 9-0. With Jason Novak in for Shortell, the Goldeyes made it 11-0 in the sixth. Asanovich drew a lead-off walk and Diaz was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Asanovich scored on a passed ball. Diaz went to third on the play and scored when West dumped one into left. Joliet got its lone run in the eighth off Derek Feldkamp on Brad Correll's 13th home run. But the Goldeyes came right back on solo home runs by Diaz and Metheny to make it a 13-1 final.

As the hitters did their thing, Bill Pulsipher (1-0) did his, allowing just two singles and three walks while fanning four in five shutout innings to get the win in his Northern League debut. Shortell (3-5) took the loss after getting stung for nine runs on 10 hits with three walks and no strikeouts in less than four innings.

This series continues Wednesday at 7 p.m. Mark Michael is up for the Goldeyes while southpaw Devin Anderson replies for the JackHammers. Great seats starting at just $5 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
