GOLDEYES UTILIZE LONG BALL IN 13-1 WIN
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-25) hit six home runs to power their way to a 13-1 win over the Joliet JackHammers (25-46) before 7,124 fans on Tuesday night at CanWest Park.
The Goldeyes scored two runs on a pair of solo home runs in the 1st inning against Joliet RHP Rory Shortell (3-5). 2B Josh Asanovich (3-4) smacked a solo home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 Winnipeg lead. RF Kevin West (2-4) added his 18th home run of the season to make it a 2-0 Winnipeg advantage.
The Goldeyes touched up Shortell for five runs in the 2nd inning. LF Dee Brown (1-4) led off the inning with a solo home run. 1B Cody Ehlers (2-4) doubled and moved to third base on a single by SS Adam Frost (1-4). A walk to C Dustin Richardson (0-2) loaded the bases for CF Cory Patton (1-4), who singled home Ehlers for a 4-0 Winnipeg lead.
DH Juan Diaz (2-4) hit a three-run home run to make it a 7-0 Goldeyes advantage.
After 3B Brent Metheny (2-4) laced a two-run single in the 4th inning, the JackHammers pulled Shortell out of the game in favor of RHP Jason Novak.
Novak took the hill for the rest of the game. He allowed four runs, (three earned runs), on four hits in four and one-thirds innings pitched.
The JackHammers scored their only run of the game when LF Brad Correll (1-4) smacked a one-out solo home run over the left field wall in the 8th inning to get the JackHammers within 10 runs at 11-1.
The Goldeyes added two solo home runs in the 9th inning, one from Diaz and another from Metheny to round out the scoring at 13-2.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes do battle in game two of their series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. LHP Devin Anderson (0-3, 6.12) gets the start for the JackHammers against RHP Mark Michael (2-2, 4.50) for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
