Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

With its six existing franchises plus the expansion Lake County Fielders all lined up for the 2010 season, the Northern League announced the addition of an eighth team on Monday with news that the Rockford RiverHawks would move over from the Frontier League.

"The announcement we made in February regarding the expansion team in Lake County as well as today's announcement regarding Rockford are an excellent reminder that the Northern League is alive and well and will be for many years to come," said NL Director of Baseball Operations Harry Stavrenos.

"This will broaden our marketing base as well as our media exposure," said RiverHawks owner and director of baseball operations Dave Ciarrachi. "We feel that this is a tremendous upgrade for our franchise."

Located in Northern Illinois about 80 miles west of Chicago, Rockford has been home to a Frontier League franchise since 2002. With the addition of the RiverHawks in 2010, the Northern League will be back at eight teams for the first time since Calgary and Edmonton left following the 2007 season to join the Golden League.

"We are very pleased with the addition of Rockford, not only from a league standpoint, but from a franchise standpoint as well," said Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier. "Our valued ticket holders have made it known they would love to see more teams come to Winnipeg and it's very satisfying to know that will happen beginning next season."
