Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Cristian Guerrero stroked a two-out run scoring hit in each of the first two innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats cruised to their ninth consecutive win at U. S. Steel Yard, downing the Schaumburg Flyers 8-2 Tuesday night in the second of a four-game series.
The nine-game home winning streak for the âCats matches the longest in team history; the 2007 RailCats won nine straight games at the Steel Yard from May 23 - June 14. The RailCats last home loss was July 13 against Kansas City, and since that time the RailCats have out-scored the opposition 68-25 at home and won five of the nine games by at least six runs, including the last two nights. The RailCats have won 11 in a row at the Steel Yard against Schaumburg dating back to June 22, 2008.
Guerrero got the âCats on the board with a long single in the first, narrowly missing a three-run home run with a blast off the top of the wall that scored Mike Massaro with the game's first run. Then in the second, after Massaro had driven home two with a one-out double, Guerrero cashed in two more baserunners with two outs, doubling down the line in left to score Massaro and Jordan Czarniecki.
The RailCats 5-0 lead after two was plenty of support for Chris Jones (6-2), who won for the fifth time in his last six starts. Jones labored a bit early but recovered to throw seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out four. The start was Jones' fourth this season of at least seven innings and lowered the right-hander's ERA to 3.23, fourth lowest in the Northern League.
All nine RailCats reached base in the win, with Massaro, Guerrero, Mike Rohde and Jeff Beachum each totaling two of the RailCats 11 hits. The âCats also drew eight walks from five Schaumburg pitchers, and Steve Haake reached base four times. A sixth inning single increased Haake's hitting streak to 10 games, and Rohde reached base for the ninth game in a row.
Alain Quijano (3-4) - in his first start against the RailCats since tossing a complete game July 20 - was knocked out after just one batter in the third inning, officially allowing six earned runs on seven hits and three walks in two innings of work. Four Flyers relievers, including catcher Craig Maddox, had to eat the final six innings.
Kyle Heyne, Tristan Facer and Andy Shipman combined to pitch the last two frames for the RailCats, extending the bullpen's scoreless streak to 14.2 innings.
The RailCats (42-30) and Flyers (31-40) meet once again Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when all kids (age 12 and under) at U. S. Steel Yard will eat for free. Every youngster through the gates will get a voucher for a free hot dog and soda, and the first 1,000 fans will also get a RailCats Picture Pack, courtesy Great Lakes Orthopedics.
Garret Holleran (2-2, 2.81 ERA) will make the start Wednesday night for the RailCats against Schaumburg's Ed Almonte (4-8, 5.40 ERA). That game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: With the win, the RailCats improve to 32-5 over the last two seasons against Schaumburg. The RailCats are 12-2 against the Flyers this season and have won five straight meetings ... Jones allowed three earned runs or less for the 11th time in his 13 starts ... Guerrero finished with three RBI and has 26 in 36 games this season despite a .195 average and only 26 hits this year.
