T-Bones Fall on Walk-Off Groundout

FARGO, N.D. - Ruben Salazar tied the game for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (39-30) with a ninth-inning single and eventually scored the winning run on an RBI groundout by Alan Rick as the Kansas City T-Bones (31-41) fell, 8-7, tonight at Newman Outdoor Field. They are now 0-5 on the season in Fargo.

The RedHawks took a 2-0 lead against Chris Rhoads in the first inning when Nic Jackson singled home Mike Coles and scored on a double by Salazar. Kansas City quickly responded with a five-run second, collecting four doubles against Matt Mossey in the inning as they gained a 5-2 advantage. Three straight doubles by Ryan Fox, Jim Fasano and Jacob Blackwood drove in the first two runs before an RBI single from Damian Rolls pushed the score to 3-2. A two-run double by Greg Jacobs capped off the scoring and snapped a 0-for-18 slump for the veteran slugger.

Jackson drove in Fargo's third run in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice and Coles pulled Fargo within one in the fourth with an RBI bunt single. Rhoads left in favor of Payton Tweddale two innings later after a leadoff double by Carlo Cota in the sixth. Tweddale struck out both batters he faced before Justin James entered and surrendered an RBI double to Coles to tie the game at five. Coles later scored on an error by Jeff Helps for a 6-5 Fargo lead.

Rhoads allowed five runs on eight hits over five-plus innings. Mossey surrendered five runs on seven hits over five and one-thirds frames. Neither factored into the decision.

Kansas City took their final lead with a two-run seventh inning, scoring the first run on an RBI single by Neb Brown. Brown stole second and advanced home on two wild pitches by Scott Koerber to push the score to 7-6.

T.J. Stanton (3-0) threw a scoreless ninth for Fargo to send the game into the bottom of the ninth with a one-run Kansas City lead. He earned the victory after retiring three of the four batters he faced.

After two scoreless innings by Daniel Sattler, Nate Cotton entered and surrendered a leadoff single to Jackson. Following a stolen base, Salazar plated Jackson with a single to tie the game at seven. Salazar advanced to second on an attempt to cut down Jackson at home and to third on an infield single by Jeremiah Piepkorn. With runners at the corners and Piepkorn running, Rick grounded to second to plate Salazar for the winning run. Brown attempted to start the double play for Kansas City, but Piepkorn beat the throw to second to secure the win for Fargo.

Cotton allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in the loss.

Luis Villarreal (5-3, 2.97) looks for Kansas City's first win at Fargo this season as the RedHawks counter with Jeff Icenogle (2-0, 8.49) tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:00.
