New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - After dropping the opener 4-0, Brad Glenn and Jack Murphy each homered to help the Fisher Cats (36-52) steal the nightcap, 5-4, of their doubleheader with the New Britain Rock Cats on Sunday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The victory is New Hampshire's first at home against New Britain this season, and gives the club an opportunity for a winning homestand in the final game before the All-Star Break on Monday afternoon.
The nightcap began with a wild first inning for both clubs. The top half saw the Rock Cats score four runs against Matt Wright, making his first start since September of 2009. In the bottom half, the Fisher Cats scratched back with a pair of runs on RBI singles from Kevin Howard and Glenn.
The comeback continued in the second thanks to a two-out run-scoring hit from Mark Sobolewski. An inning later, Glenn's 14th home run tied the game at 4-4. The blast was Glenn's seventh since returning from the disabled list.
It stayed tied through the bottom of the sixth when Murphy put the Fisher Cats ahead. With one out, he hammered the first pitch he saw from Marty Popham (L; 0-1) onto the access road behind the right field wall to put New Hampshire on top 5-4.
Fernando Hernandez (W; 3-6) earned the win, working the final three innings by retiring nine of the ten batters he faced. He gave up just one hit with three strikeouts in his final outing before the All-Star Break.
Glenn finished the nightcap 2-3 with a homer and two RBI. Murphy's home run was his on the homestand.
In the opener of the twin bill, the Rock Cats' Nos. 3 and 4 hitters gave their club an early lead. In the first, Chris Colabello, tied with Evan Bigley for the league lead with 60 RBI, plated the game's first run against starter Yohan Pino. Two innings later, after a Colabello single, Bigley re-took the RBI lead with a two-run homer to right to push the lead to 3-0.
Pino (L; 5-4) allowed one more run before slamming the door shut. He went the full seven innings for the Fisher Cats first complete game of the season. The righty, in his eighth career complete-game effort, scattered 11 hits, striking out two without a walk.
He was bested by New Britain lefty Blake Martin (W; 3-3), who allowed just three hits, recording six strikeouts without issuing a walk. All three hits were singles, and no Fisher Cats runner advanced beyond first base.
The series and the homestand come to an end on Monday afternoon on a Camp Day/Splash Day at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Fans can win great prizes by playing USA Subs Baseball Bingo during the game. First pitch is at 12:05 PM in the final game before the All-Star Break. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com.
The pitching match-up on Monday afternoon features RHP Chad Jenkins (4-7, 5.20) against New Britain LHP Logan Darnell (7-6, 4.38). Radio coverage begins at 11:45 AM with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
