Game #87 - Sunday, July 8, 2012
Peoples Natural Gas Field - Altoona, PA - 6:00 PM
LAST GAME: Cory Mazzoni fired a career-high seven shutout innings and the B-Mets defeated the Altoona Curve 8-2 last night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Pitching just 120 miles from his hometown of Evans City, PA, Mazzoni allowed just three hits and struck out six to snap a two-game losing skid. He never allowed a Curve runner to reach third base. Sean Kazmar broke a scoreless game with a two-run double off starter Kyle McPherson in the fifth, followed closely by an RBI single from Juan Lagares. Francisco Penablasted a three-run homer off reliever Mike Colla the next inning. Eric Campbell capped the scoring with a two-run single in the ninth off Jeff Inman. After Edgar Ramirez allowed the first four batters he faced to reach in the eighth, Robert Carson entered and tossed two shutout innings to earn his eighth save.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (4-6, 4.03) makes his tenth start as a B-Met and third against the Curve. Germen suffered the loss in his last start versus Altoona on July 2. The righty allowed five runs (three earned) and matched a season-high with eight hits allowed over seven innings. He fanned six and walked two. The righty beat the Curve on June 15. Germen was promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) on May 4 after going 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in five games (four starts) with St. Lucie.
RHP Brandon Cumpton (8-6, 3.13) takes the mound for his 17th start and third against the B-Mets. Cumpton took a no-decision in his last game versus Binghamton on July 3. He allowed one run on four hits over five innings in a game the B-Mets would win 3-2. Cumpton matched up against Germen on June 15 and earned the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. Selected in the 9th round of the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech, he is in his first year with the Curve.
POWER'S OUT, LITERATELY: Last night's game was delayed by one hour, forty-two minutes due to a power outage in Altoona caused by a severe thunderstorm that pounded the area two hours prior to the game. The final out came at 11:39 PM, the latest ending for any game this season.
STARTERS' STREAK CONTINUES: Cory Mazzoni became the third straight B-Mets starter to throw at least seven innings without allowing more than one run. Zack Wheeler gave up one run over 7.1 innings against Richmond on Thursday and Mark Cohoon surrendered one run over 7.0 innings on Friday. The efforts lowered the B-Mets starters' ERA from 4.00 t0 3.86.
ROLLING ON THE ROAD: The B-Mets' win last night extended their road winning streak to three games, matching a season-high set three times before. They have won eight of their last ten games away from NYSEG Stadium. Their road record of 24-21 is tied for the fourth-best mark in the Eastern League.
TWO-OUT PRODUCTION: The B-Mets drove in six of their eight runs last night with two outs. Over the last three games, all wins, they have collected 11 two-out RBIs.
ROLLING WITH RISP: The B-Mets went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position including a two-run double by Sean Kazmaz, a three-run homer by Francisco Pena and a two-run single by Eric Campbell. They have collected four hits or more with runners in scoring position in three straight games, going 15-for-34 overall.
LOCKING IT DOWN: For the second straight night, Robert Carson inherited the bases loaded with no outs. The lefty allowed one runner to score in a six-out save, his longest career save.
REPRESENTING THE B-METS: The Binghamton Mets will send two representatives to the All-Star Futures Game today in Kansas City. RHP Zack Wheeler will pitch for the US Team, while INF Wilmer Flores will be a member of the World Team.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets complete their final series before the All-Star Break tomorrow at noon. LHP Darin Gorski gets the ball against RHP Phil Irwin.
