Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - After losing its starting pitcher due to injury in the first inning, the Portland bullpen threw 8.1 shutout innings as the Sea Dogs rallied for a 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder in front of 3,979 fans at Waterfront Park. Jeremy Hazelbaker's RBI single in the ninth snapped a 2-2 tie and ultimately gave the Sea Dogs the victory.
Chris Balcom-Miller relieved injured Portland starter Mike MacDonald with the Sea Dogs trailing 2-0 with two outs in the first and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. All-Star Aaron Kurcz (3-4) struck out five in his 2.1 innings, and Brock Huntzinger tossed a perfect ninth to earn his third save.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Craig Heyer (2-3) hit Ryan Dent and then walked Jackie Bradley Jr. Lee Hyde came in to face Hazelbaker, who smacked a 2-2 pitch into right field for the winning hit.
The Thunder took a 2-0 lead in the first when Melky Mesa singled to center with two outs, plating Zoilo Almonte from second base. Bradley Jr.'s throw to third base attempting to get Luke Murton sailed wildly into the seats, allowing Murton to score the second run on an error.
The Thunder and Sea Dogs conclude the three-game series and head into the All-Star break Monday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 pm. Right-hander David Phelps (NR), just optioned from the New York Yankees, is slated to start against righty Stolmy Pimentel (2-4, 5.84) for Portland.
