B-Mets Survive Slugfest against Curve, 10-9

ALTOONA, PA - The Binghamton Mets scored three runs in three separate innings and held off a late attack by the Altoona Curve in a 10-9 win at Peoples Natural Gas Field Sunday night. The B-Mets collected eleven hits, including six for extra-bases, and navigated around Altoona's five-run eighth inning to collect their fourth straight win.

The B-Mets jumped right out of the gate against starter Brandon Cumpton. Binghamton put three runs on the board on two hits, three stolen bases and a costly error by second baseman Jarek Cunningham. With two outs, Cunnigham booted a groundball, allowing two runs to score.

The shaky defense continued for Altoona in the third. With runners on first and second, Oscar Tejeda misread a fly ball hit by Dustin Martin, allowing it to sail over his head for a two-run double. Wilfredo Tovar capped the inning with an RBI single, giving Binghamton a 6-0 lead.

The Curve scratched back in the bottom of the third against starter Gonzalez Germen. Altoona took advantage of two walks and collected two hits in a three-run inning. Matt Curry capped the rally with a two-run double.

Binghamton stretched the lead back to six in the fourth with another three-run inning. The first five batters reached safely against reliever Nathan Baker. Allan Dykstra supplied an RBI single, Jefry Marte walked with the bases loaded and Tovar added a sac fly.

After allowing an RBI double to Jarek Cunningham in the fourth, Germen settled in and retired 13 of the next 15 he faced. The right battled into the eighth, throwing a season-high 7.1 innings.

With the B-Mets leading 10-4, he allowed a triple and a sac fly before being lifted for Jeff Stevens in the eighth. Stevens only fed the flames, allowing all four batters he faced to reach safely. The righty issued three walks and surrendered an RBI double to Jeremy Farrell before Ryan Fraser took over.

Fraser inherited the bases loaded and induced Robbie Grossman to fly out before Holt ripped a three-run double to right center, cutting Binghamton's lead to one. Stefan Welch nearly tied the game with a single to center, but Lagares gunned down Holt at the plate to end the inning.

Bidding for his first save in over a month, Adrian Rosario got off on the wrong foot by allowing a leadoff single to Matt Curry, but was bailed out when Curry was thrown out attempting to steal second. Rosario put the tying run back on base with a walk, but struck out Cunningham to secure his third save of the season.

Germen (5-6) snapped a personal two-game losing streak with the win, his second against the Curve this season. Cumpton (8-7) was saddled with the loss. He allowed six runs (four earned) over three innings, his shortest outing of the year.

The B-Mets (41-46) look to ride into the All-Star Break with a sweep as they complete the three-game series Monday afternoon at 12:00 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes the mound against RHP Phil Irwin. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 11:45 AM on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
