Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (43-45) and the Aeros (51-38) combined for 19 runs and 30 hits in an offense slugfest Sunday evening that saw Akron come out ahead 11-8 in the Baysox longest nine-inning game of the season (3:38).
Two Baltimore Orioles played with the Baysox Saturday night on Major League rehab assignments. Right fielder Nick Markakis went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Catcher Taylor Teagarden drew a walk in his only plate appearance before leaving the game after the top of the third inning.
The Baysox offense hit a season-high five home runs with center fielder Jai Miller becoming the second player in as many nights to hit two home runs in a game. Despite the display of power, the Baysox were never able to quite overcome their early six run deficit as the Aeros were able to score at least one run in six of the nine innings.
Akron shortstop Juan Diaz recorded eight RBIs in the game Sunday evening, setting a new record for RBIs in a game against the Baysox. Only two previous players ever recorded seven RBI games against the Baysox with the last coming in 2001.
Akron jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning against Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Bobby Bundy. Tyler Holt hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second base when Matt Lawson grounded out. Chun Chen followed with a double to center field that plated Holt. Thomas Neal then drew a two out walk and Juan Diaz singled to center field to plate Chen and give the Aeros a 2-0 lead.
The Aeros extended the lead in the top of the second inning. Jordan Henry drew a one out walk and Holt followed with a double to center field that plated Henry and made the score 3-0.
The Baysox got back in the game in the bottom of the second inning against Akron starter Brett Brach. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop and third baseman Buck Britton hit solo home runs on back to back pitches down the left and right field lines, respectively to make the score 3-2.
Akron scored for the third consecutive inning to start the game when they added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Batting for Nick Weglarz who was ejected for arguing a strike call, Adam Abraham hit a lead off single to right field and Neal was hit by a pitch. Diaz followed with a double to left field that plated both runners and gave Akron a 5-2 lead.
The home runs kept coming for the Baysox in the bottom of the third inning. Designated hitter Robbie Widlansky hit a solo home run to right field to make the score 5-3. Akron reliever Jose De La Torre replaced Brach to finish the inning.
The Aeros kept the runs coming against right-handed pitcher Zach Clark in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Clark allowed three consecutive batters to reach base and Diaz then hit a grand slam to center field to give Akron a 9-3 lead.
Bowie cut into the Akron lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Allan de San Miguel, who was playing for Teagarden, drew a walk, advanced to second base on a balk and scored on a single to center field by Widlansky to make the score 9-4.
Akron got the run right back in the top of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Pat Egan. Matt Lawson hit a lead off single to right field and moved to second when Chen singled to center field. Abraham grounded into a double play that moved Lawson to third base and Neal followed with a walk. Diaz then singled to left field to plate Lawson and make the score 10-4. It was the eighth RBI of the game for Diaz.
The Baysox answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning against Akron reliever Kyle Landis. Miller hit a lead off home run to left-center field and Markakis hit a one-out double to right field. De San Miguel followed with another double to left field that plated Markakis and made the score 10-6.
Bowie tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Akron reliever Bryan Price. Britton hit a one-out single to right field and Miller followed with his second home run of the game to center field to make the score 10-8.
The Aeros extended their lead with a run in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Kyler Newby. Lawson hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base when Roberto Perez, who was catching for the injured Chen, laid down a sacrifice bunt. Neal hit a two-out double to center field to plate Lawson and give Akron an 11-8 lead.
Bundy pitched three innings and allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out four batters and walking two in the loss. Clark pitched two innings and allowed four runs on two hits while striking out one batter and walking two. Egan pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out one batter and walking two. Newby pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four batters and walking one.
De La Torre earned the win for the Aeros, pitching two and one-third innings in relief and allowing one run on three hits while striking out two batters and walking two. Akron reliever Preston Guilmet pitched the ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.
RHP Chris Tillman (0-0) is scheduled to pitch for the Baysox Monday as they complete a three game series against the Akron Aeros. He will be opposed by RHP Paulo Espino (3-2, 3.40).
